Passing of Tom Meyvis

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our friend and colleague Tom Meyvis. Tom was a loving husband to Mariana and a devoted father to Jos. He was also a Professor of Marketing and Merchants’ Council Professor of Retail Management and Consumer Behavior at the Stern School of Business, New York University. Tom received his PhD at the University of Florida and his Licentiaat in de Psychologie at the Catholic University of Leuven.

Tom published on a wide range of topics in consumer behavior, from branding to strategies that help consumers to enjoy experiences. Tom also wrote several papers on methodology, from how to use single-neuron recordings in marketing to ways to increase the power of experiments, for example by using instructional manipulation checks.

Tom contributed to our field in many other ways, by co-chairing the SCP conference and by serving as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, and the International Journal of Research in Marketing. He was known for writing exquisite reviews.

Tom contributed a lot to the education of PhD students. He was a frequent faculty fellow at the EMAC, ACR, and AMA Sheth doctoral colloquia. He coordinated Stern’s PhD program for many years. And he was PhD advisor or committee member to 24 PhD students who have subsequently gone on to play important roles in our field. But Tom’s impact went beyond his formal roles. We’ve been receiving messages from people all over the world telling us how their lives were touched by Tom. Many were PhD students when they met him for the first time and conveyed how humble, warm, and supportive he had been to them as a new PhD student.

Tom was a great friend. He is remembered as someone who really listened, as someone who did not speak ill of others, and who was a guiding light in research and in life.

Tom was diagnosed with stomach cancer in July 2021 and passed away in Mariana’s presence at NYU Langone hospital in the early morning hours of January 27, 2022. Tom is survived by his wife Mariana, his son Jos, his parents, and his sister. A memorial for Tom will be held on Thursday, February 3, 6 – 8 pm EST. It will be livestreamed online at https://bit.ly/tommeyvis with a slideshow beginning at 6 pm and the speaking program beginning at 6:30 pm. A digital guest book can be found at https://bit.ly/tm_guestbk.

We will miss Tom dearly.
