How to Lose Friends and Influence No One: the Documentation Penalty in Social Experiences

Documentation, or photo-taking and video recording, is ubiquitous during social experiences. While recent work suggests that documentation enhances personal enjoyment by increasing engagement, we examine its social consequences and uncover a documentation penalty, whereby documenters are judged more negatively because they appear to be less present during the experience.
