Effects of Resource Scarcity on Perceptions of Control

Can cues of resource scarcity influence people’s perceptions of control? Three experiments suggest that the answer depends on people’s childhood environments. Whereas scarcity cues led individuals from wealthier backgrounds to feel more control, those from poorer backgrounds responded by feeling less control.
